According to the Hindu calendar Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi is celebrated on a full moon day in the month of August which is known as Shravan Purnima.
What is the importance of Rakhsha Bandhan ?
Rakhi is the occasion ,which shows the bond of affection between brothers and sisters . It is a festival of love and faith between siblings.Now-a-days people from different faiths celebrate this too. On this special day, Sisters mark tilak with Roli on forehead of their brothers and tie a sacred thread(Moli) or a colourful special band, rightly called the 'Rakhi' on their brothers' wrist as a mark of affection, sisterly love, and sublime sentiments and offer sweets. In return their brothers promise their sisters to protect and hug them by offering some gifts.An aarey of dishes are prepared like Laddoos,Kheer,Halwa etc.on this festival.

Raksha Bandhan Legends
As per the mythologies, on this day, Draupadi had tied Krishna’s wounded hand with a piece of her Saree . Being grateful, he made a promise to Draupadi that he will protect her. Therfore Krishna came to the rescue of Draupadi during Cheer-Haran by Dushasana to fulfil his promise.
There is another legend in history of the Queen of Chittor, Karmavati. She had sent Rakhi to the Mughal Emperor Humayun in order to seek help from him. Humayun kept the respect of her Rakhi and sent forces to fight for the respect of his sister from the Emperor of Gujarat.
